Background
March 30, 2011 marks the 15th Anniversary of the date on which members of the Spiritual Baptist faith in Trinidad and Tobago were granted a public holiday. This date also commemorates the 60th anniversary of the group’s victory (in 1951) over prohibition in Trinidad and Tobago. It marked an end to the Spiritual Baptists’ 34 year battle for the freedom to practice their religion. This liberation was achieved by the passing of a bill that repealed the Shouters’ Prohibition Ordinance (1917.)
Spiritual Baptists will not only celebrate their beliefs and progress as a religious group on March 30, 2011, but they will also reminisce on the struggles they have endured over the years for inclusion and recognition within Trinidad and Tobago’s pool of religious bodies.
