As the nation celebrates Republic Day on Friday 24th September 2010, RHAND CREDIT UNION wishes to highlight to its Membership the significance of being a republic.
Trinidad and Tobago became a Republic on August 1st, 1976. The event is celebrated as a public holiday on September 24th because this is the date when the first Parliament met under the new Republican Constitution. The date was removed from the official calendar of holidays from 1999 to 2001 to make way for the Spiritual Baptist (Shouter) Liberation Day which is celebrated on March 30th. The Republic Day holiday was reinstated in 2002.
In its most basic form, being a republic means that the entire country rests in the hands of the individuals of the nation and not in a specific group or person within that country. The entire group of citizens elects whomever it wishes to lead it and that leader answers to the public. Individual rights and ownership are paramount and a system of laws and regulations applies equally to all.
Wishing you a Safe and Enjoyable Holiday!
