RHAND Credit Union hosted its first NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION SESSION at its Rooftop facility – Head Office, 57-61 Abercromby Street – on Thursday June 09, 2011 at 5:00pm; with a total of 28 members in attendance. Mindful of the fact that members would have been arriving immediately after a hard day’s work, the session was purposely executed in an informal setting to encourage maximum interaction between them and the presenters.
Mr. Minguell then spoke about the Governance of a Credit Union with emphasis on RHAND’s Bye-Laws and Governance Structure (Board of Directors, Credit, Supervisory and Education Committees, General Manager and Organization.) He stressed the importance of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to ensure transparency in governance and accurate financial reporting to the members.
Lastly, Mrs. Mary-Lou Marcano, Credit Committee member and long-standing (34 years) Credit Union member shared with the attendees her “RHAND Story.” She recalled the many times her Credit Union assisted her throughout the different stages of her life – in good times and bad.
The reason for hosting this activity was largely due to the types of queries usually posed by the membership at past gatherings e.g. the Annual General Meeting and RHAND on D’ Road, as well as other feedback mechanisms. Therefore, this initiative is seen as a crucial step in shedding some light on what members of the RHAND Family think they know and what they really do know about their Credit Union.
The truth is, most members are not aware of their rights and to a greater extent their responsibilities as the owners of the Credit Union. It is our aim/goal that after a Member Orientation session, members are more aware that the product portfolio of RHAND extends far beyond accessing Loans.
So, we hope to see you at our next Orientation Session as we continue to try to bridge the knowledge gap!
